Number Sense Workbooks

3 workbookletsIn January 2010 the B & A Team launched its fabulous new Number Sense Workbook series.

The workbook series has been developed to support Foundation Phase teachers who work with small groups of children at a time (on the mat).  These teachers need activities that will keep the rest of the class productively engaged in meaningful tasks that mirror the work being done in small groups on the mat.

The workbooks could also be used by parents at home as they try to support their child's early mathematical development.

The workbooks focus on the development of a strong number sense.

The workbooks have been designed to support children as they develop from Level 1 (counting all) to Level 2 (counting on) and Level 3 (breaking down and buidling up).

The workbooks are aligned (in terms of Grade appropriate number ranges and problem types) to the South African National Curriculum Statement (NCS).

WORKBOOK open bookThe workbook series consists of:

  • 12 richly illustrated workbooks:
    • 1 workbook for each term of Grade 1
    • 1 workbook for each term of Grade 2
    • 1 workbook for each term of Grade 3
  • Each workbook consist of 48 pages - one page per day
  • Initially the workbooks are currently available in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, sePedi, seTswana, se Sotho, and siSwati with other languages to follow on demand.

A typical workbook page has three different kinds of activities:

  • Counting activities including:
    • Rational counting at the start of the series when children are not yet at Level 1,
    • Counting in groups and skip counting in the middle of the series as the children progress to Level 2, and
    • Counting involving partitioning (breaking down and building up) toward the end of the series as children reach a Level 3 sense of number.
  • Patterning activities that support the development of breaking down and buidling up skills.  These skills are developed through the use of:
    • Number patterns,
    • Tables of values,
    • Number chains (short and long),
    • Flow diagrams,
    • Number boards.
    • Pyramids, and
    • many other exciting activities
  • Problems:
    • A wide range of different problem types are covered throughout the series with children expected to make their own plans as they solve the problems.
