IEB Mathematical Literacy User Group Conference
iebOn Saturday 23 February 2008, Aarnout Brombacher was invited to deliver a plenary address to the IEB Mathematical Literacy User Group Conference in Johannesburg. In his address "What does it mean to be mathematically literate?Aarnout explored the demands experienced by self-managing individuals; contributing workers; critical citizens and life-long learners in a number and data-drenched world.

Follow the "read more" link below to access the papers delivered by Aarnout at the conference.

During the conference Aarnout also presented a workshop entitled: "The effects of inflation and interest rates".  The notes and spreadsheets on which the workshop was based may be downloaded below.

In his closing remarks to the conference "When is 6 inches not enough?" Aarnout made the point that being mathematicaly literate includes being comfortable with ambiguity.  As much as teaching Mathematical Literacy involves helping individuals to become comfortable with ambiguity it also requires teachers themselves to be comfortable with ambiguity. Aarnout urged teachers while being concerned with the contents of the examination and wanting to know exactly what will be examined and how it will be examined not to lose sight of the purpose of teaching the subject. Namely, to prepare individuals to be able to participate in and contribute to a world that is defined by numbers.
