Numeracy Courses for Learning Support Teachers

81 shared among 3 childrenDuring October and November of 2007, Brombacher and Associates presented three one-week courses for Learning Support Teachers from across the Western Cape for the WCED.

Among other influences, the course draws strongly on the contents of the book: Adding it Up, Helping Children Learn Mathematics

To find a link to the Adding it Up download page and/or to read more about the course and/or to download the NCS (GET) Learning Outcomes in A3 format follow the "read more" link below.

These courses dealt with the challenges of teaching Numeracy/Mathematics in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases.  The courses focussed on the development of sound number sense and computational strategies through developing children's understanding of number; the use of problems and the role of discussion

Adding it Up, Helping Children Learn Mathematics is an invaluable resource for teachers teaching Mathematics in general and for those doing so at Primary School in particular.  Both the book and its summary can be accessed on the website of the National Academies Press.

Several sessions of the week were also devoted to the teaching of Space and Shape (Geometry) and how this should be linked to the van Hiele levels.  The relationship between the materials in the MST kits and the van Hiele levelas was also discussed.

105 teachers (15 from each of the seven EMDCs) attended the course.  In reflecting on their experiences they had the following to say:

  • I liked the manner in which each LO was explained and how it helped me develop a deeper (better) understanding of where mathematics teaching is going wrong.
  • Linking the MST kit materials to the Van Hiele levels and Assessment Standards
  • The presentation was great. Everyone was enjoying it.
  • Aarnout and Amanda baie dankie vir julle proffesionele aanbieding. Voorspoed met julle werk.
  • Workshop changed my entire understanding and attitude to maths. Love it now. Can't wait to start doing things differently.
  • I would like to invite you two to our schools to do demo's to mainstream teachers as well.

Among the handouts that participants found most helpful were the A3 tables of the Assessment Standards for each Learning Outcome.  These can be downloaded here:
