Brombacher and Associates is an education support company that specialises in the areas of Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy from primary school to college level.

We work in three key areas:

·Training: We support and train teachers and college lecturers to teach Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy.

·Materials development: We develop teaching support materials and curriculum to meet the requirements of our clients and their setting.

·Research: We conduct research for our clients on interventions and/or the state of teaching/learning in contexts and make recommendations on improvements.

Our clients include: departments of education (both national and provincial); non-government organisations (NGOs); universities; schools and colleges and education foundations to name a few.

About Brombacher

aarnout_brombacherAarnout Brombacher is the founder and head of the company. Aarnout is the former head of the Mathematics Department at Westerford High School (Rondebosch—Cape Town) and a Past-President of AMESA (The Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa).

In 1996 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and read for a Masters degree in Mathematics Education at the University of Georgia in the USA. In his thesis he looked at the experience of teachers involved in curriculum change.

During 2001 and 2002 he served on the National Department of Education’s Mathematics Working Group—a team responsible for developing the Mathematics Subject Statement for the new Revised National Curriculum Statement.

He was a member of the TIMSS International Expert Panel responsible for the development of the curriculum framework, the development of the test items and the benchmarking of the results of the TIMSS 2002/2003 study.


In 2005 he was appointed by Minister Pandor to chair the Ministerial Committee for Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy. This committee was concerned with critiquing the Mathematical Literacy subject statement, advising the Minister with regard to the levels of Mathematics to be offered and making recommendations regarding the successful implementation of mathematics in the FET.

Over the last few years he has devoted most of his energies to projects related to the implementation of Mathematical Literacy. Included in these projects are: the development of a Teacher Guide for Mathematical Literacy for the Department of Education; the development of a Mathematical Literacy curriculum for the Vocational Qualifications offered at FET Colleges; a series of television programmes; a wide range of extended teacher and subject advisor training sessions; and the development of teaching and assessment materials.
